\u00c1rea de distribuci\u00f3n:<\/strong>\u00a0crece en formaciones bajas y abiertas como parques. Su distribuci\u00f3n es muy amplia, en la Argentina abarca todo el centro-norte hasta el norte de Bs. As.<\/p>

H\u00e1bitat:<\/strong>\u00a0especie marcadamente heli\u00f3fila y meso xer\u00f3fila a xer\u00f3fila. Es un \u00e1rbol longevo y de crecimiento medio.<\/p>

  • Tama\u00f1o:<\/strong>\u00a0\u00c1rbol de hasta 18 m de altura y 1,50 de di\u00e1metro; tronco tortuoso que oscila entre los 40 y 150 cm.<\/li>
  • Corteza:<\/strong>\u00a0delgada, pardo gris\u00e1cea, estriada con surcos poco demarcados, dispuesto oblicuamente.<\/li>
  • Fuste:<\/strong>\u00a02 a 4 metros; corteza delgada, gris hasta casta\u00f1o viol\u00e1ceo con surcos longitudinales oblicuos poco pronunciados.<\/li>
  • Hojas:<\/strong>\u00a0Hojas compuestas bipinadas, de 1 a 3 pares de pinas de 6 a 12 cm. de longitud.<\/li>
  • Flores:<\/strong>\u00a0peque\u00f1as y amarillentas reunidas en racimos cil\u00edndricos. Inflorescencias alargadas.<\/li>
  • Fruto:<\/strong>\u00a0El fruto es una vaina o legumbre cori\u00e1cea suble\u00f1osa amarillenta de hasta 25 cm de longitud y 1 o 2 cm de ancho.<\/li>
  • Posee una madera pesada, tiene poco veteado y textura mediana a gruesa. Una de sus mejores cualidades es el comportamiento al secado.<\/li>

    • Brillo o lustre sin tratamiento superficial: suave.<\/li>
    • Trabajabilidad:<\/strong>\u00a0no ofrece dificultades para el aserrado en verde y permite superficies lisas y pulidas. Debido a su dureza presenta dificultades para el clavado, requiere pre taladrado.<\/li>
    • F\u00e1cilmente penetrable con regular absorci\u00f3n de l\u00edquidos impregnables.<\/li>
    • Toma bien barnices, tintes y lustres. Es una madera de poder calor\u00edfico elevado de combusti\u00f3n lenta y escasa cenizas.<\/li>

      En toneler\u00eda ha reemplazado con ventaja al roble europeo debido a su menor permeabilidad, disminuyendo las perdidas por evaporaci\u00f3n.<\/p>

      Las vainas o legumbres llamadas \u201cchauchas de algarroba\u201d han sido para laspoblaciones abor\u00edgenes y campesina el producto vegetal de mayor importancia y variada aplicaci\u00f3n como alimento para el hombre y forraje para los animales por su gusto agradable y su alto valor nutritivo, se consumen frescas, secas o molidas, prepar\u00e1ndose de esta \u00faltima forma la \u201ca\u00f1apa\u201d y un tipo de confitura conocido por \u201cpatay\u201d. Con las vainas se elabora una bebida alcoh\u00f3lica llamada \u201caloja\u201d<\/p>
